The basic Klaviyo-Shopify integration takes ten minutes. Klaviyo’s own docs cover that part fine. What they skip is which default settings cost you money the moment you click install and never look back.
1. The tracking snippet says connected but isn’t verified. Klaviyo will tell you the integration is live. It won’t tell you whether the snippet is firing on every page template, especially with custom product pages or a headless checkout layer. We regularly inherit accounts where browse abandonment has collected zero data for months, because the snippet loaded on the homepage but never made it to collection pages. Test this yourself: open a product page in an incognito window, browse for 30 seconds, then check Analytics, then Metrics, for a Viewed Product event tied to that session. Nothing there means your browse abandonment flow is running on empty.
2. The historical sync window misses your actual customers. Klaviyo’s default sync often only pulls a limited window of past order history on first connect. If you’ve been on Shopify for years, your VIP segments and win-back flows may be built on incomplete purchase history, especially for anyone who hasn’t ordered recently. Pick a few known repeat buyers and confirm their full order history shows up, not just the most recent order.
3. Product feed sync isn’t the same as real-time inventory. The integration keeps your catalog synced, but it doesn’t always update fast enough to stop a flow from recommending something out of stock, especially for smaller catalogs with fast-moving inventory. If a browse abandonment or abandoned cart email has ever pushed a sold-out item, that’s why. Check your sync frequency under the integration’s advanced settings rather than assuming it’s instant.
None of these three stop the integration from technically working. The dashboard keeps showing “connected” the whole time, which is exactly why nobody catches them. Everything looks fine until you check the actual data moving through, not just the connection status.
If your account has been linked to Shopify for over a year and nobody’s checked these three things specifically, it’s worth ten minutes before you assume the basics are handled.
