Why DTC Brands Are Overpaying Klaviyo for Contacts They Don’t Need

Klaviyo prices by the number of contacts in your account. Most brands never revisit that number once it grows, which means a real share of the monthly bill often goes toward contacts who’ll never generate another dollar.

Klaviyo’s tiered pricing bumps your monthly cost every time you cross certain contact thresholds, regardless of whether those extra contacts are engaged buyers or dead addresses that haven’t opened anything in years. A brand sitting just over a pricing threshold because of thousands of genuinely dormant contacts is paying a higher rate specifically because of that bloat, not because of any revenue those contacts bring in.

This goes unnoticed because suppressing or deleting contacts feels backwards, a bigger list looks like a bigger asset. An unengaged contact isn’t a dormant asset, though. It’s an active cost, both on your monthly bill and in the sender reputation drag we’ve covered elsewhere on this blog.

Here’s how to check. Filter your contacts for anyone who hasn’t opened or clicked in 180-plus days, a full six months is a fair cutoff for genuinely dead engagement rather than just a slow customer. Compare that count against your current pricing tier’s limit. If suppressing or deleting that segment would drop you to a lower tier, you’re paying extra right now specifically to keep unengaged contacts on the books.

Not every low-engagement contact needs immediate deletion, to be fair. Some categories, high-ticket, infrequent-purchase products especially, naturally have longer gaps between engagement without the relationship actually being dead. The fix is a deliberate process, ideally paired with a real sunset flow, not a blanket mass deletion.

List size isn’t automatically valuable. A smaller, genuinely engaged list often costs less and performs better on every metric that matters than a larger one padded with contacts who’ll never open another email. Before treating your Klaviyo bill as just the cost of doing business, it’s worth checking how much of it is paying for dead weight.
