When a DTC brand notices email revenue sliding, the first instinct is almost always to redesign the templates. New layout, new colors, a fresher look. That’s rarely the actual problem, and it’s rarely where the money is.
Here’s the math most brands never run. If your email lands in spam or the promotions tab for even 20 percent of your list, you’ve lost a fifth of your potential revenue before a single subscriber sees the redesign. No amount of better copy or a prettier layout recovers an email that never reached the inbox.
Check this yourself. In Klaviyo, go to Deliverability, then Placement Insights. It shows what percentage of recent sends landed in the primary inbox versus spam or promotions, broken out by major providers like Gmail and Yahoo. Most brands have never opened this screen. Below 90 percent placement for a major provider is a bigger leak than any template issue.
The causes, in order of how often we actually find them. First, a stale list that’s never had unengaged subscribers suppressed, 30-40 percent inactive for 90-plus days is common, and it drags down sender reputation for everyone else on the list too. Second, missing or incomplete domain authentication, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, usually a 15-minute fix once someone actually finds it. Third, a sudden spike in send volume, a big one-time blast after months of smaller sends, which can trip spam filters that a more gradual pattern wouldn’t.
None of this shows up unless you go looking. You can see your email looks dated. You can’t see it’s landing in spam for a fifth of your list unless you check Placement Insights directly. That’s exactly why it goes unaddressed, and why it’s worth checking before spending money on a redesign.
