The Klaviyo Flow Order That Actually Matters (Most Brands Get It Backwards)

When a brand builds out Klaviyo from scratch, or fixes a neglected account, the instinct is almost always to start with the welcome series. It’s the most visible, most talked-about flow, so it gets built first. That’s usually the wrong order.

A welcome flow only matters once new subscribers are already arriving in meaningful volume. If the real problem is that existing customers aren’t coming back, or carts are getting abandoned at a high rate, a beautifully built welcome series won’t touch either one. It’s solving for growth before the foundation underneath it is solid.

Here’s the order we actually recommend, and why.

Abandoned cart comes first. This flow works with people who’ve already shown the clearest possible intent, they added something to cart. It typically has the highest revenue per recipient of any flow you’ll build, and it’s usually a fast, high-confidence win.

Post-purchase comes second. You already have this customer’s trust, they just bought. This flow extends the relationship at zero acquisition cost, since there is none, they’re already a customer.

Win-back comes third. Recovering a lapsed customer is almost always cheaper than acquiring a new one, and this flow works directly against your existing list rather than needing any new traffic.

Welcome series comes fourth. With your foundation flows solid, a strong welcome experience compounds on top of them instead of standing alone.

Browse abandonment comes fifth. Genuinely valuable, but it needs more sophisticated tracking and higher traffic volume to have enough data behind it, which is why it usually works best once the other four are already established.

Building flows in the wrong order doesn’t necessarily waste the work, a welcome series built first isn’t useless. It does mean the highest-leverage opportunities sit unaddressed the longest, while resources go toward the flow that happens to be most familiar to build instead of the one most likely to pay off first.
