Is Your Email Marketing System Actually Working?
Most DTC brands are leaving $4,000 to $9,000 in monthly email revenue on the table. Find out exactly where your Klaviyo program stands — free, in minutes.
isan Morning had a loyal following and a product people genuinely loved. What they didn’t have was a reliable way to turn any of it into predictable revenue. This is the story of how we moved them off Etsy, built a complete email marketing system from scratch, and generated $8,900 in revenue across Q4 — with $2,610 of that coming from abandoned cart recovery alone.
The Problem With Etsy as a Foundation
When we first connected with Artisan Morning, their entire business lived on Etsy. Sales were happening — they had genuine fans, real repeat buyers, and products people cared about. But the growth ceiling was right there in front of them, and it wasn’t going away.
The fundamental problem with building a business on a marketplace is that the marketplace owns the customer relationship. You’re borrowing Etsy’s audience. When a customer buys from you on Etsy, Etsy has their email address. You have a transaction record and nothing else. There’s no way to follow up, build a relationship, or bring them back for a second purchase.
To grow beyond what the platform was willing to give, Artisan Morning needed to own their customer relationships directly. That meant moving to Shopify and building an email marketing system that could actually work for them.
What We Built
Once the Shopify store was live, we built an email marketing system designed around a single goal: turn first-time buyers into repeat buyers, and give browsers a reason to become first-time buyers.
The full program included:
- A welcome series for new subscribers — three emails introducing the brand story, the product range, and the people behind it
- An abandoned cart flow (three emails over 72 hours) to recover purchases that didn’t complete
- A post-purchase sequence that followed up after delivery, encouraged a review, and introduced complementary products
- A Q4 campaign calendar with a full promotional strategy leading into and through the holiday season
Every email was written and designed to match Artisan Morning’s voice — specific, personal, and handcrafted in feel. Not template copy adapted from something generic.
The Results Across Q4
The program launched leading into Q4. The results across that single season:
- $8,900+ in total revenue
- $2,610 recovered from abandoned cart flows
- 3150+ orders shipped to 15 countries
- 20,300 site visits during the Q4 launch period
The abandoned cart flow alone — three automated emails that required no ongoing effort — paid for the program multiple times over before Q4 was finished. But the revenue number isn’t actually the most important result here.
The More Important Result
The more important result is structural. Artisan Morning entered Q4 with a list, an audience they owned, and a set of automations that worked in the background regardless of whether anyone was actively working on email that week.
That’s the difference between a marketing tactic and a marketing system. Campaigns are tactics — they work when you run them and stop working when you don’t. Automations are systems — they keep generating revenue as long as subscribers are coming in and the flows are properly maintained.
Going into Q5, Artisan Morning wasn’t starting over. They were building on what already existed. That compounding effect is what email marketing is supposed to do.
What This Pattern Looks Like for Other Brands
The Artisan Morning story isn’t unusual. It’s a version of what we see with most brands that don’t yet have a complete email marketing system in place. Real products, real customers, real growth potential — and no reliable system to turn any of it into consistent, repeatable revenue.
The three things that made the difference for Artisan Morning:
- Moving to a platform where they owned the customer relationship
- Building automations that worked without requiring constant effort
- Writing emails that felt like the brand, not like a marketing template
None of those things require a large list to start. They require the right setup and the right approach. The results come from the system, not from the size of the audience you’re starting with.
