A strong open rate feels like validation your email marketing system is working. It’s entirely possible to have excellent open rates and completely flat revenue at the same time, and the reason is worth understanding directly.
Open rate tells you your subject line and sender name were compelling enough to earn a click on the email itself. Real, useful signal, but it stops exactly there. It says nothing about whether the content inside actually convinced anyone to buy anything, the offer, the product recommendation, the call to action.
The disconnect usually starts with the subject line carrying an email that can’t back it up. Curiosity, urgency, a strong sender name can reliably earn the open while the email itself fails to follow through, a generic message, a vague call to action, an offer that doesn’t match what the subject line implied.
Diagnose it by comparing open rate against click rate and revenue per recipient for the same sends. High opens paired with low clicks points to a subject line overselling content that doesn’t deliver. Reasonable clicks paired with low RPR points further downstream, toward the landing page, the offer, or friction somewhere on the path to purchase.
This goes unexamined because open rate sits right at the top of most dashboards, and a healthy one creates a sense that things are working, which lowers the motivation to dig into the numbers that actually matter more. Revenue per recipient takes an extra click to find. Open rate is right there on the summary screen.
Test subject lines in service of revenue per recipient, never as a standalone goal. A subject line change that lifts opens while lowering RPR isn’t an improvement, it’s attracting the wrong kind of attention, people curious enough to open but not the right audience for what’s actually being offered inside.
Open rate is only useful next to revenue per recipient, never on its own. A healthy-looking open rate beside flat revenue isn’t a contradiction. It’s a specific, diagnosable signal that the gap between “got opened” and “drove a purchase” is exactly where the real problem lives.
